Sylvia was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and lived in western Canada until making Aliyah in 2018. She attended University of Calgary as a mature student and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, with a major in Painting and Art History. She attended Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, B.C., 10 years later and received her Education degree.
She has been painting and exhibiting her artwork for over 30 years now. She has had numerous solo and group shows in Canada and the U.S. She has travelled extensively in Europe, the U.S., Canada, Israel, and the Carribean. For the last 20 years Sylvia has shared her love of Art with hundreds of students, giving private Art lessons and workshops, teaching in Private and Public schools, and in Recreation Centres. She has taught Painting, Cartooning and Animation, Watercolor Pencil Painting, Baby Art Classes, Glass and Ceramic Painting, Drawing, Mixed Media Painting and Design, to students from 2 to 80.
She is also sought as a Team Building Workshop facilitator by the corporate sector, including Pfizer Corporation, Banks, and many private companies. Her Birthday Painting Parties for Adults have been a hit with many 30 year olds. Fun and learning go hand in hand in all her workshops.
SYLVIA RICHMAN ARTIST STATEMENT
Painting is one way I know of to ‘be in the Moment’. And the finished paintings are a reminder of that exquisite time of ‘creating’ and ‘ being in the moment’ . Starting a new painting is somewhat scary, ending is somewhat sad, but being in the middle, in the thick of creating, ‘in the moment’, is sheer joy! As Dan Millman expounds, ‘there are no ordinary moments’
I have been blessed to know how to be in the moment while living in Jerusalem of Gold, just being, just walking, just seeing, just hearing, just sensing everything, and being alive. In my artwork I continue to rely heavily on Nature in all my work, whether Abstract or Realistic.
ALL OF MY WORK INCLUDEDThe Rainforest and all exotic flora and fauna, birds, frogs, et al, became important to me living in British Columbia, Canada for almost 30 years. I am impelled to use Nature as symbols in my work, as well as for what they are in themselves.
Butterflies figure strongly in my art, as they are symbols of rebirth, freedom and the exotic. And as there are so many thousands of exotic Orchid species, my Orchid painting days will go on and on. The textures and colors I use are mainly to enhance, not improve upon Nature.
The only way I can express my love of flowers such as Orchids, Irises, Roses, Tulips, Lilies, et al – is to keep on painting them and to explore Nature as long as I am able.
